TEST DRIVE MEME 005

HAPPY HEARTS HOTEL

You wake up in a padded box. It rocks, gently, as though suspended in mid-air. You begin to stir, confusion or distress pushing you to try to sit up — and then the air begins to smell sweet, and you fall back asleep.

You wake up in a padded box. For a moment, you are beatifically calm. You don't know how you got here, or why, but that isn't really all that important. You don't need to know where you are. You're just... here. And here is a wonderful place to be.

But there is a niggling suspicion growing in the back of your mind. A suspicion that here is not somewhere you wanted to be. That it is not where you're supposed to be. You remember... chasing a white rabbit (or was it a person)? A mirror? Bright light, and green ivy crawling over your skin... Before you can worry too much, the box jolts, and then settles, and after a long moment the walls fall from around you to reveal —

A hotel lobby?

"Welcome to the Happy Hearts Hotel and Casino," says an attendant behind a desk. "We're so pleased you could join us. We have your room keys and Empathies here, please make an orderly line and we'll hand them out once we've confirmed identities. After that, feel free to explore the hotel! We highly recommend starting with the casino. Everyone's a winner here in Happy Hearts!"

Is this normal? It doesn't feel normal. And hey — you could swear you had shoes before!

I. INFESTATION

It starts with soft squeaks echoing in the hallways, the lobby, even Oysters' rooms. There's no accompanying scratching or the scurrying of feet that would usually signify an animal in the walls, only incessant squeaking that never seems to let up. Less than a day after it begins, the first squeaking creature makes its appearance. It is quickly followed by another, and another, and another, until one can't take more than a few steps without encountering one.

They range in size from no longer than an inch to almost a foot in length, and can be found everywhere from the pool area to the buffet to crawling beneath the blankets at night. Aside from their constant presence, they seem harmless. The creatures are soft and squishy, warm and dry to the touch, and don't seem to have any claws or even teeth. If they are treated with kindness, they may even become attached to certain Oysters, who will begin to find they can tell the creature apart from the others.

They can also be killed quite easily. They are resilient, and will bounce if dropped, but they have no defense against anything sharp and the smaller ones will not recover if stepped on.

The hotel staff view the little green creatures with varying levels of distaste, from mild irritation to shrieking at the sight of one.

"It always happens this time of year," one staff may say if asked. "The weather changes, they come in from the garden."

"They're hiding," another may state. "Who wouldn't? It's much safer in here."

Safer from what, you may ask?

The hotel staff give no answer to that.

After only a few days, the small creatures will begin to change. Those who have been shown kindness will become softer, fluffier. Prolonged contact with them will invoke feelings of happiness, will bring daydreams that feel real, though no one else can see them.

Those who have not been treated kindly will become more resilient, with spikes sharp enough to prick skin at the slightest touch. Stumbling over one of these will cause terrible hallucinations, waking nightmares that can only be dispelled with assistance from another.

II. THE QUEEN'S GARDEN

The creatures have been in the hotel over a week when a new archway appears in the hotel lobby.

It is nearly October, hotel staff will say. There is a wedding to prepare for, and the yearly harvest festival. The Queen does so love her Oysters, of course, that she is opening up her gardens for both.

The garden itself is expansive, spanning multiple acres. There is a winding path lined with neatly manicured rose bushes in all colors, another overgrown with ivy, another leading through trees with leaves of reds and golds. Groves of fruit trees are heavy with apples and pears. Elaborate water fountains and delicate streams flow between small ponds, each bordered by different types of water plants and filled with everything ranging from goldfish to koi. There is a chill in the air, and scattered throughout the gardens are stone fire pits, a stash of blankets, bags of marshmallows and cartons of fresh pressed apple cider.

It is the only place aside from the pool that Oysters will be able to see the sun instead of the eternal twilight outside of the hotel windows.

Night will fall here, too, and with it all the fire pits are lit. Lanterns line the paths, and some glow from the thick of the gardens themselves, though there are still shadowy places that one can retreat to if desiring privacy.

III. HEDGE MAZE

The garden is bordered on all sides by a massive wall of shrubberyย โ€”ย a hedge maze, hotel staff will say. They may even warn that those who go in without an escort will find themselves hopelessly lost.

There is nothing stopping Oysters from trying anyway, of course. The entrance to the hedge maze is difficult to find, but not impossible for those who are persistent. No matter what time of day it is in the garden, it will be night in the hedge maze, with no lanterns to guide the way. The entrance back to the garden will glow warm and bright for only a few moments after stepping inside, and will then disappear entirely.

It seems there is no way to go but forward.

The deeper into the maze, the darker it gets, as though even the moon and stars are growing dim. Oysters may catch sounds of soft breathing in the night, and may even observe that the hedge wall itself seems to sway as though something just beyond itย โ€”ย or in itย โ€”ย is moving. Those who enter the maze will find themselves wandering for what feels like hours, days. Does that turn look familiar? Have you been down this way before? Who can tell, when nothing about the maze ever seems to change.

Eventually, Oysters will find that they have been lead back to the garden, exhausted and hungry, though no time at all has passed for everyone else.

IV. WELCOME HOME

Maybe you just want to be alone — well, that's what you have your room key for! Oysters room on the second and third floors of the hotel, one to a room. You were assured your room would be exactly what you'd always wished for — and for some, that's right! It's exactly as you would have decorated it yourself. But for others, their rooms are totally wrong. A grizzled cowboy can't have a pink room! Hotel staff are firm, though: every room is exactly as its owner wants it to be. Search your feelings, Oyster. You know it to be true.

On each bed are the Oysters' personal effects, minus weapons, as well as a towel folded in the shape of a heart, and a single foil-wrapped chocolate. If eaten, the chocolate is delicious, and incites a feeling of tender warmth in Oysters — not lust, but a desire for closeness. Why spend time in your room, when you could go find a new friend in the casino?

Please direct any questions to the first comment on this page, and happy playing, Oysters!

"But if I gave it to you then I wouldn't have it for me." Because clearly losing one jar out of 100 would be a travesty. He tilts his head as if considering his options, pursing his lips together in thought.

"If I agree to share this precious jewel, what will you do for me?"

"I'm sure you have more," Huaisang rolls his eyes and he leans back for a moment as the other it seems wants to bargain.

"What do you want?"

He plops down on the other side of the pit and picks up one of the sticks and marshmallows to cook it as well. Those nine tails splay out behind him on the ground.

"Have you tried it in the middle of the cracker yet? When you add the chocolate to it it makes it a nice treat."

"Do you know what's outside?" Jin Ling questions. It's one thing he hasn't really figured out since he's been here (well, there's a lot he hasn't figured out but that isn't relevant). He continues petting one of the weird creatures and then looks properly annoyed when the other jumps to food!

"Why would you say that!" he shakes his head at him and looks down at the creature. "Don't worry, no one's going to eat you."

If only he could be this nice to humans.

"Truth. But what you may give me in truth might not be the same as the one from my world so it almost seems like a wasted desire." Unless the man is actually willing to give it, in which case Wei Wuxian will be a very active listener.

"And I do have more, but when has that ever been enough? Especially when people make a habit of taking them away."

His gaze turns sharply back to Huaisang when he says that, expression almost unreadable - although more because it is a tangled mix of emotions and cannot seem to settle on any one of them for long than anything else. Disbelief, perhaps, is the closest.

Huaisang was the only person that Lan Xichen believed would blame him more than Lan Xichen blames himself. He had thought about it in seclusion, occasionally, when his mind could be drawn from re-evaluating every one of Jin Guangyao's actions, every one of his own - he had wondered about Huaisang, how much of their relationship was real and how much was him putting on a show to keep attention from himself.

He had accepted that he would always care for Huaisang, regardless of the answer. He had, too, accepted what he believed might be the reasons that Huaisang could not have trusted him with what he learned. He had never allowed himself to finish the thought, the handful of times that it started to occur to him if Huaisang had wondered whether or not Lan Xichen knew about what Jin Guangyao was doing to Mingjue, and turned a blind eye to that too.

But he had never once thought that Huaisang wouldn't blame him, and hearing him say that it isn't Lan Xichen's fault cracks the carefully laid foundation and walls he's started building for himself during his time here.

It is, he wants to say, it is my fault, how could it not be, but he still doesn't know how to argue that point without making it sound like he is accepting more guilt than others would put on him - or like he is excusing Jin Guangyao's actions. And so he says nothing in protest, for the moment.

"It has felt dream-like to me at times as well. But it is also dangerous here. The Queen has ears everywhere. She makes it no secret that as she brought all of us together here, so, too, can she make them suffer."

He swallows, and then continues with, "And Meng Yao is here."

"If events are similar enough I am sure my truth isn't far from my...counterparts," Huaisang counters and holds his hand out for the jar.

"And we can always share it. There would be more to go around if you didn't spill half of what you pour on yourself."

Huaisang expects protest, protest that he would argue against even if done so tiredly. There's satisfaction at seeing his revenge and justice sated but after that's all gone he's tired and he's left with everything he had lost that couldn't be brought back. Except apparently, here, something can bring a piece back even if it's not as it was exactly... he feels hopeful if only but a little. It's not Lan Xichen's fault. Huaisang could have trusted him with the information but he hadn't, he hadn't been sure that Xichen could play the part, could lie and act his way for years. Xichen is too good, too honest and Huaisang had never wanted to get his hands dirty, and yet in the end, he had.

He's quiet and he's concerned about that information, about the idea of the people he cares for suffering more already. He sighs but his thought come to a halt at that name. He balls up his hands into fists and he's so tired that pulling up a mask, just doesn't happen. After everything he'd gone through he was pulled into a world where Meng Yao is again?

"No..." he murmurs and he does his best to stay composed but something about it unravels him.

Sometimes he hates this place. He wonders if they would have all these frustrations if they were back on their world or if it is only here that they have to keep passing these trials.

There was so much he still didn't understand. The time he spends with both Lan Wangji are precious, but he has given this one so much more then he has given the other. And he feels like he should be happy that they have finally all understood these feelings they have for each other but he still feels slightly betrayed despite that.

He turns his head as he watches the other man start to walk away, afraid he was just going to leave him behind. Once more the words of the twins echo in his ears and he find that fear of being alone start to bubble up. He opens his mouth to call out to him and all that comes is a choked sob.

So it is almost a relief when the man stops by a tree and unleashing the same kind of fury on it as he had seen him do all those years ago. At the time he didn't know why, but now he does and he feels bad that this is the second time that he has made Lan Wangji unleash such anger.

When he finally trusts his voice it is still shaky from the fear of moments ago, "Lan Zhan.." He takes a couple unsteady steps towards him, trying to get back some of his confidence.

"You say you want more and you want whatever I give to him to be yours. But I've given you so much more then I've ever given him. I've given you myself, my body, my soul. You're the only one I've ever kissed on the lips or been intimate with. You're the one I wake up next to every day and you're the one I'm going to marry. Does none of that count?"

He looks down at the ground as he stops a few feet away from the other man, his heart feeling like it got left behind in a trail of broken pieces from the fire to this point.

"I'm the one that doesn't deserve you. After everything I've done, I don't deserve anything. The hotel should have left me dead..."

But there is something that still bothers him despite that, "But if it had..I would want you to find happiness with the other me someday. After you have avenged whomever caused me to be that way..and your anger is gone..I want you to move on. Because I'd rather you were happy then to be lost like you were for all those years. I don't deserve to be mourned for thirteen years. Especially not when there is someone just like me here to help you heal." Being told what he did right after he died was a shock. It was hard to accept because of the timing..because he did come back. But as he works out everything in his heart and his mind now that he knows the truth, he understands and accepts it. It still hurts but that won't ever change.

But perhaps it also hurts because there is still uncertainty in his heart, "But if the reason you kissed him when I was back was because I can't make you happy..then you should be with someone who can."

"Then a trade. Tell me a story about the head shaker in Qinghe and why he did the things he did and I'll give you half the jar to enjoy while telling it."

Wei Wuxian takes offense to that other comment though which he will handily ignore for now. He can't really fight truth even if drinking wine that way is the best way to enjoy it.

It seems that this is something else they have in common, then - when everything was revealed, after everything was done, there was only emptiness. Lan Xichen is undeniably better, after his months of being here, than he had been the last time he saw Huaisang on the steps of the temple, feeling as though everything he was had been carved out of him.

But that is only because here he has purpose. Here he must protect his brothers and nephew, here he has widened his family to include both Wuxians - and, by extension, added another nephew. Here he has hope that perhaps he might not be too late to stop Nie Mingjue's death, to prevent Meng Yao's descent from being complete, at least in two other timelines if not his own.

He cannot find it in himself to protest when he also suspects that whatever absolution Huaisang found for him may be gone, when he learns how Lan Xichen is attempting one of them. That he still believes this Meng Yao, who remembers nothing even of the Sunshot Campaign.

But watching Huaisang unravel tears at his heart, and he wishes - he doesn't know. That it had never come to this, that the people he loved were not all dead or broken, that, for once, something could go right for all of them.

"Huaisang," he murmurs, but he finds he doesn't know what to say at the moment, either. Instead he reaches out, gently curling his fingers around one of Huaisang's fists.

He definitely owes him this. He fills a glass with the wine and sets the jar down on the table, picking up the glass. With his free hand he waves at the jar as he figures the rest can now be his. He has a second jar hidden anyway.

He listens to him, every single word, as he felt the pain and anger left his body. The violence of his anger toward himself left him as he felt calmer hearing his words and the sincere honesty behind them somewhat. True, he has been unhappy, and no matter what, he stayed because he promised if they leave this world, they will leave together. They will finish every chapter and climb over every obstacle that the hotel throws at them, even if their weakness and vulnerability become exploited and exposed.

He slowly turns around to look at him, and rather not facing the tree, which he broke pass the thick layer of bark and punched it into splinters. "...I can't take him home with me. He belongs to the other one. He is not mine, even if I give a small part of my life to him, so he has something happy to cherished, it's not going to be enough. You're the one who is mine and the one I vowed and promise to take home. Of course, you deserved happiness. The hotel has no right to take your life. The hotel has no right to take you away from me. You already died for your sins, you don't need to die for something you didn't do. You did nothing wrong."

He takes a deep sigh, composing himself. "No. The reason I kissed him when you came back because Wei Ying is unhappy and we are both selfish. When you're gone, there is no replacement of you. And I'm someone who isn't capable of making you both happy because I don't understand why you love me. Kisses, hugs, gifts, what are they worth? Absolutely nothing. Wei Ying, you're my soulmate. I will not move on. It's not that simple. Because I have chosen to. You do make me happy. I missed you terribly when you were gone. And despite that, you feel you don't deserve anything despite everything that you and I did..."

He walks over because he senses his fear. That he will walk away because of his imperfections, that he is inadequate, that he is easily replaced. "I still love you and choose you, in your two lifetimes, and the many more to come. I choose you and nobody else. Because despite everything, you're....you're just right and I'm sorry."

Feeling calmer, "I'm just angry that my love isn't enough and I'll lose you again. What I must do to keep you? Would you be happier with the other if we let each other go or switch places? These are the doubts in my mind everyday."

Huaisang contemplates pouring into a glass as well but instead, he just takes hold of the jar and takes a drink before he even thinks about saying anything. He lowers it, turning it in his hand and this is more difficult than he expected.

"It started after you died," Huaisang says carefully, closing his eyes. "There had been a disturbance in our ancestral tombs. Da ge... insisted that I go with them despite all my objections. I was upset about it and he was more unstable than ever." He takes another drink then.

"I tried to insist that since I was no good at martial arts that I should stay behind and take care of the family but he couldn't be moved. I thought he was punishing me, I felt like I was the victim of his rage," How stupid he had been back then. "Meng Yao gave me a flute to help soothe da ge's anger if it was necessary."

And Huaisang continues explaining that they had gone he leaves out some of the parts that aren't really relevant, his time spent saving Mingjue and them making some things right between them. That's too painful and personal to recount to someone who seems to have some suspicion of him. Who's asking this of him for their own reasons. Instead, he explains what happened with the saber's spirit in the tomb. That Mingjue had started losing control and turned against Zonghui. So, Huaisang had started to play the melody that Meng Yao had taught him, taught to Meng Yao by Lan Xichen only it wasn't what Huaisang had thought it was. Instead of calming Mingjue, he had killed Zonghui, nearly killed Huaisang before he found himself. By the time Mingjue had vanished, Huaisang had known without a doubt but he only started realizing Meng Yao's true nature that night in the tomb.

"Everything I did was for da ge."

Normally, Huaisang would have kept it together until he was alone but more than almost anyone else Xichen is the safest person to let see him this way. Suddenly it felt as if over a decade of his life had been for nothing and every betrayal and the grief of realizing it felt fresh. He tries to hold the tears back but they fall and he bows his head, not pulling his hand away from the other's touch but he doesn't uncurl his fist.

There's sorrow but there's anger. There's so much anger and he wants to rip Meng Yao apart with his bare hands, or do what he had done to his brother.

"It's not fair."

He ducks his head down even further, hiding his expression behind those long bangs. Lan Wangji says he is perfect and done nothing wrong but all of that seems farthest from the truth. It feels like he has done nothing right and perhaps he never will and they will always be caught in these situations. He can't help how he feels towards the other Lan Wangji but that doesn't mean he wants to switch. He knows that his place is beside this Lan Wangji and has never doubted that for a moment.

"Have I done something to make you think those things? Has there ever been a night when I didn't come home to you and made you doubt my loyalty? Have I ever said something to cause you to to feel like I did more with hm?"

His voice is weak, tired from the strain of all these emotions and mentally fragile. Perhaps they needed this...perhaps before they can possibly get married these doubts and truths must be voiced. Because by entering into the marriage with so much weight on their hearts and shoulders would only cause they pain in the long run. But that doesn't make it any easier to deal with now, even knowing that they need to do this.

"Is the only reason you stay with me because I am the one from your world? Does he make you happier?"

These weren't thoughts he had ever had until this moment, but now the fear grips him like a vice. Does Lan Wangji really want to take his soul twin back with him instead? Perhaps after all this time the one Lan Wangji really loves is his soul twin. Perhaps he is the one that is truly in both their hearts and this Wei Wuxian is the one on the outside.

He feels his legs grow weak from the mere thought of that and his knees buckle. He plops down on the ground as if his legs just can't support his weight any longer.

He sips the drink slowly, because listening to the story is more important then the wine. But a good story deserves good wine. Not that this story has a particularly good theme to it. It fills in some holes while creating more questions at the same time. And yet they aren't questions that Huaisang would be the one he would want the answers from. And the Meng Yao of now doesn't hold those answers yet.

Once the story and the wine are finished he sets down the glass. Does it make him doubt this man any less? Maybe only slightly. But he also can't completely fault him for doing what he did. The loss of family can make someone do intense things.

"With how everything turned out..are you satisfied?" An eye for an eye. Revenge at its finest. Did he not do the same thing to the Wen sect in order to pay back what they did to Jiang sect? When it came to cruelty, there were few that could rival the Yiling Patriarch.

"No. I am glad he paid and he's held accountable... and that he can't continue his treachery or hurt anyone else but...I spent so long trying to gain it and in the end with nothing left to fight for there's just... what was lost," Huaisang murmurs, an honest answer because he supposes that Wuxian deserves it.

"He was responsible for a lot of the things that happened to you are you upset that I did what I did to expose him? Are you upset that I brought you back so you can live a full life, you can... not everyone you love is gone. Do you, of all people, judge me?"

Huaisang starts crying, and Lan Xichen's chest feels hollow, as though he is crying as well although he isn't sure he has any tears left at the moment.

He doesn't have a response to that. It isn't fair. Their world had not been fair, or kind, to so many of them. Even here, in his darkest moments alone, he is acutely aware that he cannot change any of it. He remembers his conversation with Wangji, that when they have found a way free of this place, they will all go back to their homes.

It has been enough, for him, to believe that he may yet stop Nie Mingjue and Meng Yao's futures from becoming his past. It does not change the fact that when he goes home, nothing will be different. He thought he would be at their sides for the rest of his life, but instead he only tied them together in destruction. Lan Xichen will still be thinking and rethinking every choice he ever made, he still doubts he will ever completely trust his own judgment again, and Huaisang will still be without his brother.

The world has not been fair to Huaisang, and there is nothing he can do to fix it.

His fingertips press into whatever gaps he can find in Huaisang's fist, and he tugs on it lightly.

"Come here?"
scaredofdogs: (pic#14042093)

[personal profile] scaredofdogs 2020-09-26 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
He is silent as he considers that answer. Before at the temple he might have been more upset with Huaisang then he is now. He has far more reasons to be glad to be alive then to dwell on the fact that he was brought back but at the cost of another life.

"I can't blame all of my bad choices on the things that he did." He lost control of himself and killed Jin Ling's father. He is the one that caused those deaths at Nightless City. Meng Yao might have moved a few pieces into place, and for those he does hold slight resentment, but his choices were his own.

"So I do not judge you for what you did but I also will not commend you for it either." All of them made poor choices but none of them can change the past to fix their mistakes or find a better solution. No one should have had to die and yet, many they cared about did.

"I don't need or want to be commended," Huaisang says, his eyes narrowing. "It is not as if I have been telling people what I did. I simply did what needed to be done. That is all."

Huaisang takes a long drink from the jar and stares at the fire pit. "I don't regret anything I did for him. I only wish I had known sooner there was a viper in my own home and we all would have been spared many losses."

Huaisang stares down at the other's hand, the way his fingers press and the way that Huaisang almost relaxes his hand. He tries to control the tears but it's difficult and his breath shudders when he tries not to let it go. He moves closer to Xichen. It had been a long time since he could even allow himself to cry like this, to grieve not only Mingjue's death but the loss of Meng Yao who had been like family.

"Why did any of this have to happen?" it's a futile question but he chokes it out anyway. It's all so stupid. How couldn't Meng Yao have seen that he was loved why did he have to destroy everything?

It was impossible not to notice the pattern of new arrivals, and really, he needed to start expecting that there may be a handful of people he knows, or perhaps worse, that know of him, and perhaps be a little more careful in concealing his identity. He's had the rare good luck though, in that those who'd arrived were also allies, either his or Hanguang Jun's, though it'd been a near thing with Nie Mingjue.

Even so, any trepidation about guests is quickly forgotten when he sees the other new arrivals. He's nearly stepped on half a dozen of them before reaching the lobby, and the sudden shout to watch his step has him nearly tripping over his own feet. It's only owing to his reflexes that he's able to steady himself on a nearby potted plant, and he sees that, ah-

Another familiar face. Of course it is. Lan Wangji had filled in the bits of story that Wei Wuxian hadn't experienced himself, before being dragged here, but there'd been little to no mention of Nie Huaisang. No warnings, nothing. So, Wei Wuxian's face does what it does most naturally, and breaks into a smile, and he hopes the younger Nie brother will give him more of a chance to explain himself than his older brother had.

"Ah... Nie-xiong, been a while, huh?" perhaps a little too casual for greeting a what- sect leader now? But no one could ever accuse Wei Wuxian of being a stickler for rules and propriety.

"Mm, of course, I've been out there," he nods, but doesn't go into more detail. Where's the fun in telling right away after all? Maybe it's a little selfish too, he can see so much of his brother in the young man's reactions and mannerisms.

Wei Wuxian is quick to make himself a nuisance, especially when it gains such a response, and he can't help laughing, even as Jin Ling cradles the little creature close, petting it and talking to it so earnestly.

"Why wouldn't I? You know where meat comes from, don't you?" he grins. While it's likely Jin Ling has never had to hunt for his own food, he has to know that it still comes from little critters just like this. Rabbit or chicken or other fowl, why not one of these?

"You're not even a little curious?"
